AI Writes the Code, Who Owns the Product?
You generated 500 lines of code in 60 seconds. You shipped the feature before launch. Your manager is impressed. Here’s the question nobody is asking: If it breaks at 2 AM, can you fix it without pasting the error back into the same AI that wrote it? If the answer is no, you’re not an engineer! You’re an operator, and operators don’t survive production incidents.

The “vibe coding” trap
It has never been easier to spin up an entire feature in seconds, just prompt an agent and watch the code appear. It feels productive. It looks impressive. But more often than not, it produces code that nobody on the team truly understands.
The danger isn’t that AI writes code. The danger is that no one can defend the decisions behind that code, not in a code review, not in a sprint retro, and certainly not during a production incident at 2 AM.
We used to worry about missing semicolons and syntax errors. Those problems were obvious and easy to catch. Today, the risk is far more subtle: AI-generated code that runs perfectly in development but carries flawed logic, skipped validations, or silent failures that only surface under real-world conditions. What happens when a shipped feature crashes in production and the engineer who prompted it can’t explain why it was built that way?
The solution is straightforward; review code like a human, not like an agent. AI doesn’t understand your business rules. It doesn’t know your users. No matter how skilled you are at prompting, there will always be a gap between what you mean and what the model interprets. One misunderstood prompt can produce a feature that works technically but fails the actual business requirement. And that’s a far more expensive bug to fix than a missing semicolon ever was.

Understanding > Implementing
Understanding is much more important in 2026. What ships faster isn’t important; what is being built and why it is being developed is important, and such a responsibility is no longer the Product Manager’s. AI does compress the implementation time to near zero, then what’s left is product thinking, trade-off analysis, and architectural judgment. As I was working at Amega, managing multiple concurrent products required constant prioritization decisions that no agent could make.
Understanding must always precede implementation. Without a clear grasp of what we are building and the value it delivers, we are simply executing tasks without direction. Developing a product-oriented mindset begins with asking fundamental questions: What is the core product? What specific benefits does it offer? Why does it resonate with users? While these considerations may historically fall outside standard technical job descriptions, grasping the complete picture is now an essential prerequisite for developing effective features.

The “ownership gap”
When you use an AI agent to write a feature, you must ask yourself: Who actually holds the mental model of this system? If a system breaks in the middle of the night, a superficial review during the pull request is insufficient. If you do not fully grasp the logic, you will be forced to prompt the agent to debug its own errors, trapping yourself in a dependency loop. Generating code is not the same as owning it; true ownership requires the ability to articulate exactly how and why the code functions.
This level of ownership carries profound responsibility. Before the proliferation of AI, the software engineering process from conceptualizing logic and writing code to testing and debugging was entirely manual. AI has drastically compressed this timeline, fundamentally altering developer responsibilities. Today, the mechanical act of coding may be delegated, but the architectural understanding cannot be. For engineers collaborating with agents, stepping into a role of absolute ownership is the mandatory first step.
To operationalize the concept of ownership, I rely on a foundational checklist when developing any feature, module, or product. This framework scales across all levels of complexity:
- Can I articulate the ‘why’? If you cannot clearly define the user problem and justify this specific solution over alternatives, you are not ready to build, with or without AI.
- Can I architect this on a whiteboard? Before generating a single line of code, map the data flow. If you cannot, the AI will make architectural decisions by default, and you will only discover them in production.
- Have I defined the end state? Establish acceptance criteria, edge cases, and failure modes before engaging the AI. AI optimizes for output completion, not architectural correctness.
- Am I reviewing critically or optimistically? Do not merely ask, ‘Does it work?’ Ask: ‘What hidden assumptions did the AI make? What edge cases were ignored? Where will this break under load or malicious input?’
- Can I debug a 2 AM failure manually? If your only debugging strategy is to paste errors back into the prompt, you are caught in a dependency loop. True ownership means you can manually trace and resolve the logic.
- Is this a draft or a final product? AI-generated code is strictly a first draft. It requires the integration of your specific product context, architectural standards, and engineering judgment.
- Would I defend this in a code review? If you would not confidently justify every line to a senior engineer, the code is not ready to ship. AI does not attend postmortems; you do.

AI as a power tool, not a replacement for craft
A nail gun does not replace a carpenter’s understanding of load-bearing walls. Similarly, AI must never replace an engineer’s comprehension of data flow, performance implications, or user experience. AI is an amplifier of skill, not a substitute for it. Attempting to replace entire engineering teams with AI is a fundamentally flawed strategy because software engineers are hired to solve complex, scaling problems, not merely to generate syntax.
The consequences of ignoring this reality are severe. Consider the recent failure of the startup Enrichlead. The founder publicly boasted that 100% of the platform’s code was generated by Cursor AI, emphasizing ‘zero hand-written code.’ Within 72 hours of launching, the platform was exposed to elementary security flaws: unauthorized users could freely access paid features and alter database records. Because the founder lacked the foundational engineering knowledge to secure the system, he was trapped in a dependency loop. Unable to fix the vulnerabilities even with Cursor’s assistance, the project was permanently shut down.

The product-minded engineer becomes Essential
Forward-thinking engineers recognize that generating boilerplate code is now trivial. The foundational principles of software planning remain unchanged; the shift is simply that execution now begins with a prompt rather than manual syntax. True product development still requires answering fundamental questions: Who is the target audience? What problem does this solve? What is the simplest iteration that validates the idea? This marks a definitive industry shift from ‘developer as coder’ to ‘developer as decision-maker.’
A product-minded engineer understands the architecture from the core, enabling them to leverage AI effectively. Consider two developers tasked with building a FinTech backend. Alex is a ‘vibe coder’ who lacks foundational Node.js knowledge but relies heavily on prompting to generate routes for authentication. John, a senior engineer, begins by establishing the architectural foundation: configuring secure environment variables, setting up middlewares, and structuring controllers.
When a critical bug emerges, such as the application crashing upon user login, the difference in their approaches becomes obvious. The crash might stem from a missing default subscription plan during registration or a failure to hash passwords before database entry. John, possessing the mental model of the system, can instantly trace the logic gap. Alex, however, is left blindly prompting the AI to find a code error he never truly understood. A prompt-reliant coder will rapidly destabilize an enterprise project, whereas a senior engineer fundamentally owns the logic being generated

The junior engineer crisis
A critical misstep for many early-career software engineers lies in how they structure their learning pathway. While a formal computer science degree provides a baseline, cultivating logical reasoning, a product-driven mindset, and innovative thinking requires years of hands-on experience. The priority for junior developers must not be mastering prompt engineering. Instead, they must first master the underlying logic, foundational concepts, and architectural basics of software design so they can ask an AI the right questions.”
Whether starting a project from scratch or onboarding midway, a junior engineer must understand how architecture is designed for scalability. They need a firm grasp of design principles like DRY, SOLID, and KISS, alongside a deep understanding of data structures and their specific framework. Recognizing these structural patterns and organizational standards is what drives genuine career growth. Relying on AI to blindly resolve Jira tickets in pursuit of short-term recognition is a dangerous trap; without foundational engineering knowledge to guide the AI, developers will quickly encounter complex problems they cannot prompt their way out of.

Owning AI Means Directing It
To be clear: this is not an argument against AI. It is a warning against surrendering your engineering agency to it.
AI is arguably the most powerful tool we have ever possessed. It compresses hours of boilerplate into seconds, identifies hidden patterns, and allows a small team to execute the workload of ten. The technology is not the issue. The danger arises when execution precedes thought. It happens when you accept initial outputs without questioning the underlying assumptions, or when you deploy code you cannot explain to a colleague, let alone debug during an outage. That is not utilizing a tool; that is being managed by one.
True ownership dictates that you establish the architecture before the agent generates a single line. You must define the constraints, edge cases, and acceptance criteria. Treat AI output with the same scrutiny you would apply to a junior developer’s pull request. The AI proposes; the engineer decides.
The developers who will dominate this new era will not be the fastest prompters. They will be the engineers who deeply understand what they are building, why they are building it, and how to fix it when it fails. They will use AI as a force multiplier for their own judgment, never as a substitute.
